Stuff we recommend

Step 1: Get the stuff

Poker-night hosting stuff we recommend, organized around what each item does for the room.

  • Cards and chips with useful denominations
  • One table approach that fits the room
  • A visible dealer button
  • Enough seating and clear lighting
  • Optional dealing and chip-handling aids

You do not need every item below. The table recommendations are alternatives, and the accessories are optional.

Starting-bank estimate

How many chips?

Estimate an exact starting stack for every player using fixed tournament denominations. Re-entries, add-ons, color-ups, and replacement chips are not included.

Use the largest field you expect to seat at the same time.
Total value of starting chips per player - not a cap on chips accumulated during play.

The estimate runs in this browser. Raw player and stack values are not stored or placed in the URL.

Chips

Printed denominations are especially useful for keeping the bank clear. For cash games, a consistent 100-to-1 relabeling works well: $25 can represent $0.25, $100 can represent $1, and so on.

Chips

Monte Carlo poker chips - 1,000-piece set

Why we recommend it

High-quality 14-gram clay-composite chips with printed denominations. The mix includes more $1 chips than many games need. In our experience, the included metal case eventually begins separating at the seams, so the acrylic carrier below is our preferred storage upgrade.

Chips

Monte Carlo poker chips - 500-piece set

Why we recommend it

A smaller set of the same high-quality, clearly denominated 14-gram clay-composite chips when 1,000 chips would be more than your game needs.

Chips

Monte Carlo poker chips - individual denominations

Why we recommend it

Add only the denominations your bank needs. For a cash game, you can consistently treat $25 chips as $0.25, $100 chips as $1, and higher printed values at the same 100-to-1 scale.
